Irish Flutes / Folk Flutes

WildWinds represents Mark Hoza’s Kything Flutes in UK and Eire.  Mark’s keyless folk flutes are startlingly nice players, loud, fast and with a great variety of tone colours available under player control.   My involvement with these flutes began when Steve Aal showed me his at the home of squeeze box specialist Theo Gibb in Gateshead, Northumberland.  It was love at first blow.  I bought one from Mark and loved that just as much.  I have continued to love every one passing through my hands ever since.  There hasn’t been a second best yet!

At a Folkworks Summer School flute class in August 2007, tutor Claire Mann, who is an outstanding Irish flute performer, was very favourably impressed, stating, “I like these, they have a lot in them”.  Then she tried more of the 12 flutes we had brought to the class and further commented “and they’re all good”.  At the end of the class session she asked about the price and said “I am very impressed with the flutes Sam showed us, they are very good value for flutes of that quality.  I would recommend them to anyone in the class”.  We can recommend Claire’s playing as well!

All but one of these was Mark’s “Player’s” flute in one of the many options we had that day.  It is suitable for beginners, but you never grow out of it.  The final one was what we call the “Professional”, with a tuning slide and silver rings.  It is more beautiful and more expensive.  It sounds just the same.

Mark and I are working together on a keyed version of his flute.  Of all my 30 flutes, five of which are contemporary and from good makers, it is always my Hoza that I come back to.  I want a keyed Hoza for myself.  When they come, you will want one too.  But don’t wait, the keyless is so perfect for carrying around with little risk of damage, you will want one of those anyway.

You can see details of Mark’s flutes on the following pages, along with the options and prices.

Sales, Repair and Restoration of Woodwind Instruments

We also undertake sales, repair and refurbishment of flutes especially, but also of other woodwinds, covering traditional, world and classical orchestral instruments.  In due course as this website develops, used instruments as purchased will be shown, some available for immediate resale.   As these are restored, the instruments will be made available for purchase ready to play.

Please contact us if you are looking for any particular vintage flute, or need help with a unique flute repair.  Our workshop is prepared for just about anything.

Headjoints for Boehm Flutes

Hoza headjoints bring out the best wooden sound quality from a metal or wood Boehm “classical” flute.  They can be fitted to almost any flute.

If you are a Boehm player and want the woody sound.  Or, if you want to use a Boehm flute for Irish / Folk music, a Hoza headjoint will do the trick for you, and strengthen your bottom end notes at the same time.

The other option that suits a Boehm player well is a Player’s or Professional flute with C thumb hole.  This works just like the thumb key on your Boehm, and, at least for me, is totally automatic.  The resulting scale plays F# rather that the F of the Boehm as Left 1 finger is lifted, but otherwise it is identical to Boehm fingering, eliminating the cross / forked C of the standard Irish flute or whistle.  Of course that will still work if you leave your thumb in place.

You can see details of Mark’s headjoints on the following pages, along with the options and prices.

Flutes from around the world will soon be available to compliment our “Irish Flutes” from Mark’s workshop.
